Seven coronaviruses are now known to infect humans: the alpha, beta, gamma, and delta strains, SARS, MERS, and COVID-19. While the first four are responsible for influenza-type illnesses, with a fatality rate of 0.1 percent, both SARS and MERS are more deadly.
This is not the first disease bats have given us. Rabies possibly originated in bats. So did, and does, Ebola, outbreaks of which usually trace back to people coming into contact with bat roosts in caves, trees or buildings.
A free society releases the energies and abilities of people to pursue their own objectives. Freedom means diversity but also mobility. It preserves the opportunity for today’s disadvantaged to become tomorrow’s privileged and, in the process, enables everyone, from top to bottom, to enjoy a fuller and richer life.

A question that is increasingly being asked these days is whether we are now heading into another ‘Dark Age’, where common sense and rational thinking are again being replaced by fanaticism and superstition. In addition, the State is becoming more pervasive and people are feeling increasingly powerless to change or improve their lives.
The only effective safeguard for ordinary people is the ability to make a free personal choice among competing suppliers whose livelihood depends on satisfying the final consumer. Dedication to that principle from 1984 onwards is what places that Labour government squarely in the established Labour tradition of putting the needs of the common people first.
As if the problem of suicide in New Zealand is not bad enough, the Government is now considering legalising cannabis even though cannabis use doubles the risk of psychosis and schizophrenia, thereby significantly increasing the risk of suicide.
Cannabis advocates have followed the same playbook. They press for medical legalization, then argue for recreational use. Linking legalization to medical use has proven the crucial step. It encourages voters to think of marijuana as something other than an intoxicant.
Drug use is now the major threat to public safety on our roads.
